“Give me 30 days, I’ll change your body. Give me 60 days, I’ll change your life” – Bikram
We are so happy that you’ve decided to join us. We guarantee that a regular Bikram Yoga practice will change your life in the most wonderful ways. If you feel nervous, scared or a little intimidated, no problem, many people feel that way initially. Just don’t let it stop you from coming to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners, follow these tips and you’ll be prepared for your first class.
Good hydration supports the healthy function of all of your body’s systems, and it makes the heat feel comfortable rather than overwhelming.
This gives us time for registration and orientation. Arriving early ensures a stress free and relaxed beginning to your life long Bikram Yoga practice.
Most people find that they need to leave 2-3 hours between their meal and class. However, if you find you need a snack try a piece of fruit like a banana or something light about an hour before class. With time you will discover for yourself what is best. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different routines.
It’s hot! No need to be too modest, wear what you will be most comfortable sweating in. Most women prefer shorts and a jog bra or tank top. Guys, be sure you can move and stretch in the shorts you wear! Think; dress like you’re going to the beach! No long sleeves or pants please.
If you have your own yoga mat, bring it along, otherwise mat and towel are complementary during your introductory offer, and are available at the studio for rent or purchase after that.
The teacher may ask you to do things that are different from other yoga classes you’ve taken. Keep an open mind and be present in the experience instead of judging it before its even over.
You will feel challenged by the yoga during class, everyone does. Always work to your edge, but listen to your body and your inner wisdom. As a beginner, never be afraid to sit down if you need to. It’s normal, especially when you first start, to feel dizzy, nauseated or lightheaded. It’s temporary, and as your body acclimates and detoxifies, these sensations will disappear.
Bikram’s Yoga is for everyone. Don’t think you have to get in shape before coming to class. That puts the cart before the horse! Everyone comes to this yoga class to improve. Our goals may be in different areas, but we are all looking to make a change in ourselves. Many of us are shy about the areas where we seek improvement, and may worry that others will judge us. Just remember we’re all in this together, rooting for each other. Flaws are normal; as are the insecurities we carry with them. No one comes here to display their perfection; we all come here to practice and to grow.
Stay in the yoga room for the entire class, and do your best – you will finish with an amazing sense of accomplishment!
We encourage all new students to come back for their second class the next day — especially if you wake up a little tender. Stiffness and sore muscles are indicators of the strengthening and transformation taking place as a result of your practice. Following up with another class will assist in conditioning the muscles and advance the healing process.
Make up your mind to take 10 classes as quickly as possible. Then no one has to tell you how good this yoga is for you. Your own personal experience will guide you. Remember, everyone had their very first Bikram Yoga class, even the people in the front row who have been coming for years. They make it look easy because they persevered, and you can too.
